Music Business

In today's Music Business we have a lot of people that don't know how to copyright music. The first step to working in the entertainment business is paperwork. I encourage all artists to read books on music business and music management. Everyday we hear or see someone new that say they are a rapper or R&B singer. The digital world and internet world has made is a little easier to market music because it is almost free to advertise your product. Myspace, Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook are great tools to product yourself. An artist should register as a songwriter with either BMI or ASCAP so they can be paid for their music. It is important for the artist to also start them a publishing company. When working with a music producer it is important than the artist and produce have an understanding of the royalties and splits. Music producers own fifty percent of any record they produce. Artists have to market themselves in the streets and too their fans. Artists can be scared to be different and set themselves apart from everyone else. Artists have to build a team around them. Hiring a good manager and entertainment attorney is the first key.

  1. I would like to say that this information has been very helpful to me. I plan to register to one of the two companies you provided and get paid to write songs. I will let all of my friends know about these programs. Thank you!

  2. Hey Sidney,

Your post is right on. It’s clear that you have been in and around the business for a while. I plan to subscribe to your blog. I would love to pick your brain sometime since we are in the same business. The more that an artist knows and understand about the business the more they have control over their destiny.

  3. Awesome job! I was actually thinking of something really similar so i incorporated it all in mine. I think this is very important for young indie artists who want to do something but don't exactly know how to go about doing it. A site such as this one will be very positive for the industry.
